There are 77 candidates from 39 countries on the confidential list of nominations this year: 4 from Africa, 4 from the Arab world, 20 from Asia, 1 from Australia, 26 from Europe, 12 from Latin America and 10 from North America.
Jakob von Uexkull: "Everybody in the world can nominate anyone for a Right Livelihood Award. This open nomination process shows us every year what people world-wide perceive as the most urgent problems. And it allows us each year to honour some of those pioneers who provide practical and innovative solutions to new global challenges. The award recipients are always distinctive and different from previous years, but over time their collective work amounts to an affirmation of hope in the human future, despite overwhelming present problems and challenges."
The Right Livelihood Award, which has become known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize", was originally created and endowed by Jakob von Uexkull, a Swedish-German national who sold his valuable stamp collection to fund it. Its aim is "to honour and support those offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent challenges facing us today". The 2,000,000 SEK award is now also financed by donations. The Right Livelihood Awards will be presented on December 9th in the Swedish
Parliament. Further information, including the names of members of the
international jury, can be found on our website: www.rightlivelihood.org
